cinema corner: the spanish apartment

I think God sends you a film when you’re supposed to watch it. And if you try to watch a film and can't get through it, it's not the time for you yet.

I watched this while living in a box at the Au Fleuri hotel in 20e. The first week in my new city lacked the pretty of Paris. I slept on a little twin bed using my Decarnin rabbit fur as a blanket cus i was scared of the sheets. But at least i had a place to lay my head and wash my ass.

The first day of my Student life we had a mandatory screening: The Spanish Apartment, a story about a foreign student leaving his family, his lover and all things familiar for Barcelona with no accommodation and no knowledge of the language.  He sleeps on the couch of a rich couple he met on the Eurostar as he desperately flat hunts during the day rendering nothing but little Au Fleuris until he finds a spot shared and sullied by 6 other foreigners, each from a different country.

At its core its about a boy stepping out of his shell, finding who he wants to be, leaving behind who he’s been told to be. And it comes with growing pains. I told Ryan that it almost made me want 7 roommates. But life’s not a movie. Sometimes i forget. When a film follows a friend group you should watch with yours and pick which one is You. And its always Cherry on top when a  film is enrolled in the charming early 2000s school of the edit.

Theres no more to say. Watch it.
